Since 2001, the German Department at Michigan State University has organized a “German Lunchtime Enrichment Program” in a local elementary school with the intent to expand to other elementary schools in the Greater Lansing area. These enrichment programs provide many children with their first exposure to a foreign language and culture, and in doing so open them to possibilities that would not otherwise be available.
The program is staffed by department graduate students and advanced undergraduates under the direction of Professor Karin A. Wurst. The goal of the lunchtime enrichment program is to take advantage of children's natural enthusiasm for language learning. The students engage in playful activities which practice both productive and receptive skills. Cultural material is introduced whenever possible with authentic materials such as German games, books, and songs. These materials are developed and selected by the graduate students, under the supervision of Karin Wurst. This provides a unique opportunity for graduate students to practice developing materials, and gain teaching experience.
The goal is not to produce significant language ability, but rather to encourage students to study German, and instill in them a desire to learn the German language. Response to this program has been very positive, and we plan to expand it to neighboring schools in the upcoming years.
